Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate hopeful for Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency, Retired COP George Tuffour, is reportedly considering running as an Independent in the forthcoming 2024 parliamentary election.

This comes after Madam Shirley Kyei emerged victorious over the incumbent MP, Hon Emmanuel Agyei Anwhire, and the retired Commissioner of the Ghana Police Service in the NPP’s parliamentary primary election, which saw close to 940 delegates vote to choose between four candidates.

Afterwards the primary, COP (Retired) George Tuffuor obtained 324 votes, as opposed to 209 votes for the incumbent Hon. Emmanuel Agyei Anwhire, 395 for Madam Shirley Kyei, the winner, and 6 for Dr. Dennis Addo.

The electorate in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency, according to information gathered, is urging COP Tuffour to run as an independent in the 2024 parliamentary election.

The residents claimed they were going to cast “skirt and blouse” in favor of the NDC parliamentary candidates if the retired Commissioner of the Ghana Police Service rejected their recommendation, the source noted.

COP (Retired) George Tuffuor was unable to clarify his position on matters at hand in an interview on Kumasi-based Boss FM in response to the constituents’ plea.

He claims that he is still in constant communication with his followers and some of the local gurus, but he has not yet made up his mind regarding whether or not to run as an independent.

“As humans, we must prepare ahead, especially when it comes to our political space. Thus I am unable to tell you at this time, if I would run as an independent”, he told the host

He went on to say that the delegates hold the authority to make decisions within the party regarding internal elections, but the entire constituency has the ultimate say when it comes to general elections.

According to him, the delegates have no ability to make decisions on behalf of the entire constituency.

“I am here to serve my people, not just the delegates in this constituency, so even if I lose the primary, I still have a duty to care for them”.

The unsuccessful parliamentary aspirant declared that, although he does not intend to harm the party, he will give his constituency priority in his future political career.

Additionally, he disclosed that his primary goal in running for the Atwima Nwabiagya South NPP Parliamentary Primary was to unseat the sitting lawmaker.

He declared vociferously and unequivocally that his goal was to unseat the sitting MP and his MCE, and he was successful in his endeavor.
