Dampare’s Removal: Kwakye Ofosu Clarifies President Mahama’s Decision Amid Criticism

Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has extended his heartfelt felicitations to erstwhile Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, following his recent removal from office.

Speaking on The KeyPoints on March 15, Mr. Ofosu underscored that Dr. Dampare’s vast professional experience and relatively youthful age of 54 render him an invaluable asset, with a promising future beckoning.

“We can only wish Dampare well and express our gratitude for his meritorious services. Undoubtedly, with Dampare’s expertise, he remains a highly sought-after individual, poised to make meaningful contributions in other spheres. This development is merely a routine leadership transition,” Mr. Ofosu averred.

He made these remarks while engaging in discussions on Dr. Dampare’s removal as IGP on March 13, which paved the way for the appointment of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as his successor.

Addressing concerns about the decision, Mr. Ofosu clarified that Dr. Dampare’s removal was not precipitated by any wrongdoing, but rather a strategic maneuver by the President to revamp the country’s security leadership.

The announcement has elicited disparate reactions, with some police officers celebrating the change, while others, including members of civil society, have expressed trepidation about its implications for national security. Some critics contend that the letter announcing Dr. Dampare’s replacement should have provided an explanation for his removal.

Responding to these concerns, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu reiterated that, as a public servant, an official does not necessarily have to commit any wrongdoing to be replaced. “The President has the prerogative to express gratitude to an appointee for their service and appoint someone else. A new leader often effects changes to align key institutions, like the security services, with their vision for the country. This is not personal; it is simply an inherent aspect of governance,” he explained.

Mr. Ofosu further noted that changes in leadership within key state institutions, including the police service, should be expected whenever a new government assumes office.

According to him, those in such high-ranking positions should always be prepared for transitions as an integral part of their public service careers.

President John Dramani Mahama has also expressed his appreciation to Dr. Dampare for his dedication and service to the nation, acknowledging his significant contributions to law enforcement and national security.
