At least three more persons have been confirmed dead in Monday’s road crash at Offinso-Abofour bringing the death toll to 20, the police have confirmed.
Seventeen people died on the spot while 16 others were hospitalised for treatment at various health facilities after sustaining injuries in the motor accident.
“Unfortunately, we lost three more victims. The driver of the sprinter bus as we are well aware died on the spot. The driver of the articulated truck, however, was severely injured, per my checks this morning, he has been transferred from the St. Patrick’s Hospital in Offinso to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital,” the Offinso Divisional MTTD Commander, DSP Edmund Nyamekye, told Accra-based Citi FM.
The head-on collision involved a Kumasi-bound articulated vehicle which veered off its lane and a sprinter bus, the Offinso police confirmed.
How it happened
“The accident involves a sprinter bus with registration number GT 6075-15 and an articulated truck, GS 4339-17. The sprinter bus was loaded with passengers heading towards the Savannah Region and then the articulated truck was coming from Techiman towards Kumasi.
“So, when they got to the Abofour Forest, the articulated truck veered off its lane into the lane of the sprinter bus and there was a head on collision, so far we have registered 17 deaths,” DSP Nyamekye earlier told Asaase Radio on Monday (1 November).
He said investigations have started into the crash.
