The Eastern Regional Secretariat of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a stern warning to aspiring parliamentary candidates, urging them to cease associating their campaign materials with images of presidential aspirant hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The party expressed concern over the widespread use of Dr. Bawumia’s photo on posters and banners alongside those of parliamentary hopefuls, creating the perception of an endorsement.
As the region prepares for campaign activities beginning Sunday, August 6, 2023, a statement signed by Tony Osei-Adjei, the Eastern Regional Secretary of the NPP, was addressed to constituency executives and aspirants. The statement emphasized the need for a fair and transparent candidate selection process and highlighted the importance of maintaining unbiased practices.
The statement clarified that while the party appreciates the support and enthusiasm shown for Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, he does not endorse or support any specific candidate at this stage. It stressed that the Vice President is fully committed to backing the party’s chosen candidates for each constituency, irrespective of whether they are orphan constituencies or those with sitting Members of Parliament.
The letter urged aspiring candidates to refrain from producing promotional material that implies an endorsement from the Vice President. Such actions were deemed misleading to supporters and could potentially sow divisions within the party.
Emphasizing the importance of unity during and after the campaign activities, the letter called for a focus on presenting the most suitable candidates for each constituency in order to effectively serve the people and conduct a successful campaign.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a flagbearer hopeful of the NPP, commenced a campaign tour of the Eastern region on Sunday, August 6, 2023. Over the course of nine days, he and his campaign team are engaging with delegates and party stalwarts in various constituencies, leading up to the super delegates election and the presidential primaries. The campaign’s schedule includes visits to Akuapem South, Akuapem North, Okere, Yilo Krobo, and New Juaben South constituencies, with the tour concluding on August 14, 2023.
