The Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has challenged the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and Principals of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Institutions to improve their educational outcomes or stand the risk of having their institutions closed down.

The Minister explained that closing down the schools would help save the nation from the huge financial losses being incurred by the government as a result of the existence of the schools so that the affected students would be redistributed to other nearby schools, so they could continue their education.

Responding to this in an interview on High Radio Morning Show, Mr. William Boadi, the Chief Executive officer of Educate Africa Institute (EAI) an education think Tank has said the decision by the education minister implies he is running from responsibilities entrusted to him as a minister in charge of education.

He said the minister’s assertions depict his unreadiness to handle the ministry of education because they are there to provide solutions but not to create problems. After all, immediately a school is closed down due to its inability to perform, it creates a great vacuum which will be a problem to the nation indicating that it may prevent a lot of people from accessing education.

He emphasized that the education minister’s decision to close down school over non-performance signifies he is running away from his duties because he must accept blames together with the Ghana Education service to fix the problems leading to the Non-Performance of these schools rather than closing them down.

He added that to prevent subjecting to grades to failure of students, the ministry must focus on identifying of God-Giving talents of most students who cannot depend on writing and reading to make decisions in schools, stressing that the ministry must support some of these students discover and manage their talent to be able to achieve the best out of them.

He finally advised the school-going children to know their purpose in school by ensuring they desist from activities that endanger or affect their education.

He pleaded with school authorities to teach students how to use mobile phones to enrich their learning abilities rather than allowing them to focus on watching materials on their phones that have nothing to do with education.
