Mr. John Kwame Duodu, also known as Sir John, the NPP Constituency First Vice Chairman for Atwima Nwabiagya South, praised the nation’s hardworking farmers and fishermen for their persistent efforts in producing food for the populace despite significant obstacles.
He observed that farmers and fishermen work hard in the fields and on choppy waters to provide food for our dinner tables, raw materials to keep industry running smoothly, and goods needed for the global market to bring in the foreign exchange required for development.
Sincere congrats on National Farmers’ Day this year to all of our farmers and fishermen. You still reign as our heroes and heroines.
“Your efforts in keeping agriculture the backbone of our economy, employing the majority of the working population in our country, and contributing significantly to GDP’, he lauded.
The patron of Ashanti Regional TESCON specifically recognized the excellent work of agribusiness farmers who use labor, machines, energy, and scientific knowledge to turn raw animals, crops, vegetables, or marine materials into consumable goods.
He also applauded the current government for its initiatives to boost food production in the nation, including growing crops and generating employment.
He anticipates that the government will make sure that as many farmers as possible have access to farm equipment, supplies, and subsidies.
He also encourages farmers to participate in the government’s flagship initiative, Planting for Food and Jobs, to ensure the program’s viability.
National Farmers Day was instituted in 1985 by the then Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) government after the industries showed 30 percent growth in 1984, which was a significant improvement over the 1982 and 1983 years when the country suffered a severe drought.
It is celebrated on the first Friday of December each year to recognize the contributions of farmers and fishermen in the country and is designed to pay respect to the importance of the farming and fishing industries in the socio-economic growth of Ghana.
The Day was first celebrated in Osino, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana, where the drought was most severe, and an award-winning package consisting of two machetes, a pair of Wellington boots, and a pre-set radio was given to the best farmer.
The 39th National Farmers’ Day celebration, held at Tarkwa in the Western Region, is on the theme: “Delivering Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience.”
