The family has confirmed the death of Mary Salifu Boforo, former Member of Parliament for Savelugu in the Northern Region.
According to a close relative, Boforo died after a brief illness while being taken to the hospital. She was 71.
Boforo represented Savelugu from 1996 until 2017. After more than two decades in office, she lost the 2016 NPP primaries and stepped down from active politics.
Because she was a devout Muslim, the family has arranged for her body to be flown to her hometown for a traditional burial.
Friends, former colleagues and the wider political community are mourning her loss, describing her as a steadfast leader who worked tirelessly for the people of Savelugu. Tributes are expected to pour in over the coming days as her legacy is remembered.
