The 9th Parliament of Ghana has officially constituted its key committees, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to enhance legislative monitoring and governance.
These committees comprise members from both the Majority and Minority sides of the House, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives.
The Committee of Selection, chaired by Speaker Alban Bagbin, has played a crucial role in composing the membership of various Standing and Select committees. Some notable appointments include Isaac Adongo, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, as Chairman of the Finance Committee. Adongo’s expertise in economic and fiscal matters will be invaluable in reviewing the national budget, tax policies, and other critical financial issues.
Other key appointments include Abena Osei-Asare as Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), succeeding James Avedzi, the former Member of Parliament for Ketu North. Kwaku Agyemang Kwarteng has also been appointed Chairman of the Budget Committee.
Additionally, the Appointments Committee, chaired by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor, has been established to vet President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial nominees. This committee comprises seven National Democratic Congress (NDC) and four New Patriotic Party (NPP) members of Parliament.¹
The formation of these committees is a significant step towards promoting transparency and accountability in government.
With their diverse membership and expertise, these committees are well-equipped to provide effective oversight and ensure that the government is working in the best interests of the Ghanaian people.
