The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has condemned recent attacks on its personnel, vowing to pursue strict legal action against perpetrators.
In two separate incidents, firefighters were physically and verbally assaulted while carrying out their duties.
GNFS, in a statement on Tuesday, September 10 explained that ADO II Abdul Aziz Annor, a firefighter from the Ministries Fire Station, on September 3, 2024, sustained a fractured ankle after being attacked by a driver and his mate in Accra.
The incident occurred while Annor was replenishing the station’s fire truck at the La Palm T-Junction.
The suspects were arrested and granted bail on September 9, 2024, with court proceedings scheduled for October 24.
Two days later, firefighters from the Dansoman Fire Station faced a similar ordeal.
While responding to a fire near the Dansoman Roundabout, residents verbally and physically assaulted the personnel.
The firefighters, despite the attack, managed to contain the blaze with the assistance of additional fire trucks.
The GNFS has emphasised that assaulting firefighters is a crime and will not be tolerated.
The Service has assured that it will provide the necessary care for the injured firefighter and take all necessary legal steps to ensure justice for all affected personnel.
Meanwhile, the Dansoman Police is currently investigating the matter to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The GNFS has urged the public to support and respect its personnel, who risk their lives daily to protect communities.
