The government has finally paid a total of GHC1,218,897 to three surviving victims who were severely injured during a violent protest in Ejura in the Ashanti Region, two years ago.

17-year-old Awal Misbaw got his leg amputated as a result of the shooting, while 22-year-old Louis Ayikpa and 31-year-old Nazif Nuhu also sustained gunshot wounds. Each victim received between GHC 190,000 and 600,000 during a brief ceremony held on Wednesday (15 February).

The compensation follows a report by a fact-finding committee into the June 29 fatal clash between soldiers and protesting residents of Ejura.

The irate youth went on a rampage over the death of a social media activist, Ibrahim Mohammed, also known as Kaaka. Two people were killed, and three others were seriously injured.

A chief director at the Interior Ministry Adelaide Annor-Kumi represented the Interior Minister and presented the package on behalf of the government.

The chief of the Ejura Traditional Area, Barima Osei Hwedie II, praised the government and urged state security to bring the killers of Kaaka to justice.
