NPP Race: “I’m Not Here To Test The Waters; I’m Here For Power” – Bryan Acheampong Declares

Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rally behind a shared vision as it looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference held in Kumasi on Saturday, 21 June, Dr Acheampong made no secret of his political ambitions, stating unequivocally, “I’m not here to test the waters. I’m here for power.”

 

His forthright declaration was met with loud applause from party delegates, signalling strong support for his emerging candidacy.

 

Dr Acheampong framed his speech as the beginning of a focused and strategic effort to return the NPP to power, urging unity and purpose among the party’s grassroots and leadership alike.

 

Reflecting on his political journey, Dr Acheampong highlighted his longstanding contributions to the party, including roles in grassroots mobilisation, his tenure as an MP, and service as a Cabinet Minister.

 

He asserted that his accumulated experience had equipped him to lead the NPP into what he termed “a new era.” One constituency chairman echoed the mood of the gathering, saying, “This is not just about Bryan. It’s about building strength together as a party.”

 

Although the official contest for the party’s flagbearer is not due until January 31, 2026, Dr Acheampong’s appearance at the Kumasi event was widely interpreted as a formal entry into the leadership race.

 

Dr Acheampong joins a growing list of aspirants, including the former Education Minister and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, who have also announced their intentions to lead the party into the 2028 polls.
