Lionel Messi ‘To Hold Press Conference Tomorrow To Discuss Barcelona Exit’

Spread the love

Lionel Messi will hold a press conference on Sunday morning to say his official goodbyes and explain his departure from Barcelona after ending his 21-year tenure in Catalonia.

The 34-year-old has spoken to Paris St Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino as he considers his next move with an offer expected from the French side over the coming hours.

The Argentine’s representatives contacted PSG on Thursday once it was confirmed Barcelona could no longer honour the contract they had agreed.

Pochettino was keen to ascertain Messi’s desire to make the move and discuss what role he would have within their stellar squad alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Messi is in Barcelona where he plans to make a public address to media and supporters from the Camp Nou at 11am on Sunday to put his side across regarding his departure.

He has been described by Sportsmail sources as still being ‘hurt and in a state of shock’ following Thursday’s news that he would be leaving the club he has served for 21 years and was unsure about the move to PSG.

Although he wanted to leave Barca last year, he had been convinced by Joan Laporta’s project and was looking ahead to playing alongside new signings such as Sergio Aguero.

Messi, 34, has been a free agent since July when his contract expired. He had agreed a new five-year contract on reduced wages but the club blamed La Liga’s ‘financial and structural obstacles’ for not being able to keep him. Indeed, Barca president Laporta said keeping Messi could have put the club at risk for 50 years.

The Argentina captain is Barcelona’s record scorer with 672 goals and has won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and seven Copa del Reys, as well as claiming the Ballon d’Or on a record six occasions.

PSG coach and fellow Argentine Pochettino wanted to reassure Messi that he could take the club to the next level in the Champions League and that an offer would be forthcoming over the weekend.

A deal would be possible under Financial Fair Play because PSG’s recruitment this summer has centred largely around out-of-contract players in the form of defender Sergio Ramos, midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, while right-back Achraf Hakimi joined from Inter Milan.

They still plan to sell a number of fringe players.

Barca president Joan Laporta held a press conference on Friday to discuss the bombshell news and now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Messi will do the same on Sunday.

Messi is yet to make a public statement since his Barcelona departure was confirmed, with Laporta telling the media that the Argentine wanted to stay at the club for a further two years.
