Ministerial Vetting Chaos Report Ready; MPs Found Culpable Will Lose Their Seats – Committee Chairman

The Chairman of the Ad-Hoc Committee investigating the chaos that disrupted the ministerial vetting in Parliament on January 30, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, says persons who have been found guilty will be sanctioned severely.

He said this includes the possibility of being expelled from the house.

Speaking to 3FM with Helen Appiah-Ampofo on April 3, the legislator for Ho West stated that the outcome of their work will be made known to the public.

“Our report is ready, and as soon as we return from recess, we will lay it before the House. We won’t hide it from the good people of Ghana, so they should wait patiently for it. Various degrees of sanctions will be meted out to anyone found guilty including being expelled from the chamber,” he explained.

Mr Bedzrah bemoaned the act while expressing deep disappointment at the shocking scenes of physical altercations and heckling among lawmakers.

“Parliament is degenerating into a dishonorable House because such actions not only bring the chamber into disrepute but also erode public confidence in the institution’s ability to conduct its affairs with integrity and professionalism,” the Chairman lamented.

Mr. Bedzrah debunked claims of being unfair to members of the Minority caucus as alleged by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

“Let me put on record that it was not part of our job to target or witch-hunt anyone. Our work was to hear from all parties involved and look for evidence of any member of Parliament who may have flouted the rules of engagement. That is not witch-hunting of our colleagues; that is democracy,” he stated.

On Thursday, January 30, both the Minority and Majority members of the committee clashed over the timing of the vetting process for President Mahama’s Ministerial appointees.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, set up a seven-member committee to probe the cause of the chaos which erupted while announcing the suspension of these Members of Parliament from sittings for two weeks: Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Alhassan Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.
