The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said the National Service Scheme will no longer be mandatory.

In his vision to the nation, Dr Bawumia aims to improve the education system, post-education experience, and employment for the youth.

Addressing the nation for the first time since his election as presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA)on Wednesday (7 February), he said, “I believe it is time to rethink the concept of our current National Service Scheme … National Service will no longer be mandatory and students will have the option to decide whether to do National Service.”

He believes that company recruiters will seek students directly from campuses, making National Service more of a voluntary process.

To improve the education system, Dr. Bawumia proposes focusing on these key areas and skills: STEM, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and vocational skills.

He said “My government would make coding and robotics standard in senior high school.”

He reveals that efforts to enhance educational technology access are underway, starting with the upcoming distribution of laptops to senior high school (SHS) students, following comprehensive training provided to teachers.

he said, this initiative sets the stage for a broader strategy, the “One Student, One Laptop” policy, aimed at tertiary students.

This policy will facilitate the acquisition of laptops through a zero-interest loan, complemented by a substantial 70% discount on the laptop’s cost, repayable over four years, ensuring that tertiary students in need have the necessary tools for their studies.
