The Upper East Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has taken this year’s National Constitution week celebration to staff of the Ghana Prison Service in Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality.

The move was part of activities of the Commission to accomplish its mandatory and constitutional role of educating and sensitizing the citizenry on relevant constitutional issues.

It would be recalled that the National Chairperson of the NCCE, Madam Kathy Addy, launched this year’s National Constitution week celebration at the Sagnarigu Chief’s Palace in the Northern Region, and called for patriotism from Ghanaians.

The celebration was on the theme; “30 years of consolidating Ghana’s democracy, building national cohesion through civic education and local participation.”
Mr Maxwell Agbenu, the Regional Director of the NCCE who addressed staff of the Prison Service, said the annual National Constitution week celebration commenced in 2001 to remind citizens of their constitutional rights and responsibilities.

He said it was also critical for officials of the security services to be conversant with the 1992 Constitution of Ghana as they worked to secure the country.

Mr Agbenu said security service officials played crucial roles in maintaining law and order, and must have deeper understanding of the 1992 Constitution.

He further stressed the need for Ghanaians to protect and defend the Constitution of Ghana as stated in Article three of the Constitution.

Mr Awewugu Nabili, an Officer of the Prison Service, expressed concern about political interferences in operations of Security Services in the country, and called on them to refrain from such acts.
A Deputy Superintendent of Prison (DSP) Mr Daniel Sapak, thanked the NCCE for the initiative to sensitize and remind them of their constitutional rights, responsibilities and mandate as a Service.
