The National 1st Vice Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Ekow Danquah Smith popularly known as Chairman Butey has rejected assertions that one of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) contenders for the Assin North by-election, Charles Opoku, is not qualified to participate in the impending by-election.
According to Mr. Ekow Danquah, this claim is being perpetrated by members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and has been spearheaded by the party’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, because Charles Opoku is not a voter in Assin North.
Speaking in an interview on Assin Fosu-based Nap Radio monitored by MyGhanaMedia.com / Daily Searchlight Newspaper , Mr. Ekow Danquah explained that one can contest parliamentary elections in a constituency when the person is not a registered voter there.
He added that Article 94 of the 1992 Constitution stipulates that a person shall not be qualified to be a Member of Parliament (MP) unless he is a citizen of Ghana, attained the age of 21 years and is a registered voter.
It further adds that the person must be a resident of the constituency in which he or she is contesting. Mr Ekow Danquah further reiterated that the person they are talking about meets all these requirements .
He further explained that if you are not a native of the constituency, you must have stayed there for at least 5 years or more to vividly be qualified to contest “You can contest even if you are not a resident but a native of the constituency,” he added in Twi.
Mr. Ekow Danquah also alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is afraid of Mr Charles Opoku, who has been elected as the Parliamentary Candidate on the ticket of the NPP ahead of the forthcoming Assin North by-election.
“NDC is afraid of Charles Opoku that is why they are engaging in such theatrics but they have failed,” he stressed.
“Charles Opoku is the next MP for Assin North; we are taking over the seat,” Mr. Ekow Danquah stated.
He said their candidate sends shivers down the spine of the NDC.
He therefore urged the NDC to go to court if they have a case.
