NDC Fights For Togolese Voters

The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has drawn a line in the sand, vowing to prevent any attempt to allegedly prevent Ghanaians living in Togo from voting in the upcoming general elections.

According to Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, NDC National Chairman, the party will not stand idly while citizens are unfairly denied their right to vote simply because they reside outside Ghana’s borders.

Asiedu Nketiah’s comments came during a rally in Ziope, located in the Agotime Ziope Constituency, which shares a border with Togo.

He questioned the logic behind the ROPAL Law, passed by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), which appears to discriminate against Ghanaians living in Togo.

“If you’re a Ghanaian living in America and fly to Kotoka International Airport, they’ll let you vote, but if you’re a Ghanaian living in Togo and want to vote in your hometown, they’ll call you a stranger and deny you the right to vote. We won’t accept that discrimination,” he emphasized.

This development is set against the backdrop of the Western Togoland Rebellion, a separatist movement that has been simmering since 2020.

The movement seeks independence for the Volta Region, which was formerly known as British Togoland.

The region has historically been a stronghold of the NDC, and the party is keen to mobilize its supporters to vote in the upcoming elections.

Asiedu Nketiah urged constituents to remain steadfast, warning that the NPP would attempt to suppress their votes by preventing relatives from crossing over from Togo to vote.

“They’ll find every reason to prevent you from voting and to prevent those who live in Togo from coming to their own country to vote,” he stressed.
