The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially confirmed its leadership structure for the 9th Parliament, signaling the party’s strategy to manage legislative affairs in the upcoming session.
The newly appointed leadership lineup includes:
Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader.
Patricia Apiagyei as Deputy Minority Leader.
Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Chief Whip.
Habib Iddrisu as First Deputy Minority Whip.
Jerry Ahmed Shaib as Second Deputy Minority Whip
In response to the leadership confirmations, the NPP is set to convene a meeting with its Members of Parliament-elect to brief them on their roles and responsibilities in preparation for the official opening of the 9th Parliament.
This leadership selection highlights the NPP’s commitment to maintaining cohesion and ensuring effective parliamentary management, even as the party adapts to a new political landscape.
The NPP’s new leadership faces challenges following a significant electoral setback in the 2024 general elections.
The party lost over 50 seats, securing just 81 seats in the 9th Parliament, a sharp decline from the 137 seats it held in the 8th Parliament. In contrast, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged as the dominant party, securing over 180 seats, thus becoming the majority in the 9th Parliament.
As the NPP navigates this shift in power dynamics, its leadership will play a critical role in managing opposition strategies and influencing legislative priorities in the new Parliament.
Speaking to the media after being officially named to lead the NPP’s side in Parliament, the Effutu Member of Parliament expressed his gratitude to the National Council for placing their trust in him.
“What I can say is that I thank the National Council for the trust reposed in me, and the decision to confirm me to lead my side in Parliament. I can promise them one thing: hard work, hard work, hard work. May God be my guide,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
