NPP Summons Flagbearer Hopefuls, Takes Disciplinary Action Against Abronye DC Over ‘Unguarded Comments’

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has summoned all flagbearer aspirants for a crucial meeting on July 3, 2025, while referring its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (alias Abronye), to the disciplinary committee for violating party directives.

The decisions were announced in a statement dated June 24, 2025, by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong following a National Steering Committee meeting on Tuesday.

The party directed all declared presidential hopefuls to attend the joint meeting with the Steering Committee and National Council of Elders to discuss “matters of mutual interest.”

This comes ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, to select its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. Notable aspirants include former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, ex-Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey, and Abetifi MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

In a stern move, the NPP also sanctioned Abronye for “breaching directives of the National Council” and making “unguarded public comments,” though specifics of his infractions were not detailed.

The party further ordered an immediate halt to unauthorised caucuses or associations involving current and former executives meeting with aspirants, warning such actions undermine unity.

“The Party wishes to once again remind members of their constitutional obligation to protect party unity, to abide by and publicly support the Party’s decisions,” the statement emphasised.

The NPP’s internal discipline measures signal a tightening of protocols as it navigates a high-stakes succession race. With Dr. Bawumia widely perceived as the frontrunner, the July 3 meeting is expected to set the tone for a competitive yet cohesive primary season.
