The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to engage with former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison, following her decision to run as an independent candidate for the Agona West seat in the 2024 general election.
NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong underscored the party’s dedication to unity and its ambition to “break the eight,” a reference to extending its rule beyond the usual two-term limit.
Cynthia Morrison, who is the current Member of Parliament for Agona West, declared her independent candidacy after losing in the NPP parliamentary primaries.
Addressing her constituents, she stated, “God willing, I will be contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona.”
Despite the primary setback, Morrison reaffirmed her commitment to the progress of Agona West and called on her supporters to rally behind her independent bid.
In an interview on Eyewitness News on Thursday, August 22, 2024, Kodua Frimpong emphasised the NPP’s focus on unity and its efforts to bring all members, including those considering independent runs, back into the party fold.
“As a political party, for this year’s election which has been our mantra, we are going to break the eight. In breaking the eight means we need to do exceptional things and bring everybody on board. Our objective is to make sure that all our party faithful are brought on board.
“So, taking steps that will make sure that at least we engage those who are going independent is something that we are going to do rather than whether to write them a letter or not to write them a letter. What we want to do is to bring everybody on board…the party leadership will continue to engage her.”
