The Agyemin-Boateng Conference Room of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Kokomlemle will from today, August 12 to August 16, 2024, be the beehive of activity as the party begins the verification of all its 276 parliamentary aspirants ahead of the opening of nomination between September 9 and 13 by the Electoral Commission (EC).

In line with that, the party has constituted a nine-member Parliamentary Verification Committee under the Chairmanship of Frank Davies with the responsibility of ensuring that all the 276 aspirants would have their documentation properly scrutinised.

The committee will sit between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day. With Evans Nimako, Director of Research and Elections, as secretary to the committee, the other members of the committee include Gary Nimako, Ben

Abdallah, O.B. Amoah, Joyce Opoku-Boateng, Sophia Kokor, Nana Adwoa Adobea Asante and Michael Kwadwo Nketiah.

Schedules

The committee will begin its work today with the verification of documents of aspirants from 53 constituencies in the Ashanti and Ahafo regions. It will be followed by aspirants in the Eastern and Central regions on August 13, 2024, where the committee will vet the aspirants from 56 constituencies.

Aspirants from the Greater Accra and Volta regions will follow on August 14, 2024, with candidates from 52 constituencies and then aspirants from 57 constituencies from the Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East and Upper West Regions on August 15, 2024.

It will end with aspirants from 58 constituencies from the Oti, Western, Western North, Bono and Bono East regions on August 16, 2024.

Mr Nimako told the Daily Graphic yesterday that the major concern of the Committee was to further probe the documentation as presented and “effectively ensure that all of the candidates meet the Constitutional requirements as outlined in Article 94 of the 1992 Constitution.”

He said the committee would verify that each document complied with the regulations and requirements of the Electoral Commission (EC); gather and present a comprehensive report detailing each candidate’s compliance status and communicate with the candidates to address any identified issue during the screening process.

“As it is the responsibility of the Committee to recommend to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, on the suitability of a candidate, the Committee still bears that onerous burden of seeing to it that all available and useful information are relied upon as basis for their recommendations,” he explained.
