The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have jointly clarified that no decisions have been made regarding a potential increase in transport fares.
GPRTU and GRTCC additionally urged commuters to avoid paying any unapproved new transport fares until an official announcement has been issued.
This advisory follows the announcement by the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana of a 15% increase in transport fares effective Monday, July 22, 2024.
According to the union, despite the recent surge in fuel prices, there has not been any decision taken to increase transport fares as bein speculated about.
“We also wish to put it on record that there has not been any engagement with stakeholders in this stance. Therefore, transport fares remain the same until such a decision is reached by stakeholders and communicated to the general public as it has been the practice,” the union noted in a statement released and jointly signed by Mr. Godfred Abulbire, General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and Mr. Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).
According to the GPRTU, it is their policy to communicate any fare adjustments publicly, ensuring that passengers are well informed and prepared.
It also directed all commercial transport operators to comply with the existing fares.
