Obuasi (Ash), June 7, GNA – The Obuasi Government Hospital has inaugurated its newly-constructed Maternity Block to improve maternal healthcare in the Municipality and adjoining districts.

The 16-bed capacity project, funded by the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Community Trust Fund (AGA-OCTF), aims primarily to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths.

It comprised an operating theatre, delivery, examination, recovery, anaesthetic and sluice rooms.

Others are a neonatal intensive care unit, doctor and nurses’ offices, washrooms and reception area, as well as a two-post-natal ward with an eight-bed capacity each.

Mr Emmanuel Baidoo, Senior Manager for Sustainability, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, indicated that the project was initiated after several engagements with the Municipal Health Directorate, Management of the Hospital and other stakeholders.

The engagement, according to the Senior Manager, bothered on the challenges related to maternal healthcare.

Some of the equipment and accessories at the state-of-the-art facility are operating theatre table, operating lamp, incubators, ward and delivery beds, examination bed and recovery lamps, anaesthesia machine, autoclave, baby scale, patients’ monitor, wheelchairs and pulse oximeter.

Messrs GABS Civil Engineering Works, an Obuasi-based contractor, executed the project.

Mr Baidoo said the project formed part of the AGA-OCTF’s contribution towards bringing to standard maternal healthcare, especially in the area of monitoring by clinicians of new-born babies and mothers after safe delivery.

Reduction in cross infection cases due to the limitation of space of the existing facility was the other reason for constructing the Block, he stated.

Mrs Yaa Manu, the acting Municipal Health Director, said the AngloGold Ashanti had been instrumental in providing the requisite resources to the Directorate to boost quality healthcare.

She entreated the health workers to take good care of the project to prolong its lifespan.
