Alan Kyerematen, Leader of the Afrafranto Alliance led a delegation and leadership of the alliance to pay a courtesy call on President-Elect John Dramani Mahama in his private office on Friday, December 20, 2024.

Following an earlier congratulatory press release by Alan Kyerematen, this visit was to present the entire ARC in person to commend Mahama on his victory and foster a collaborative approach to national development.

The interaction highlighted mutual respect and a shared commitment to Ghana’s progress.

In his remarks, Alan Kyerematen emphasised the two areas of interest to the Afrafranto Alliance in terms of governance. He first spoke to a government of national unity, meant to reduce excessive partisanship, curb the practice of abandoned government projects and also the exclusion of talents.

Mr Kyerematen’s second plank was the need to move from IMF interventions to sustainable development based on the Great Transformation Plan (GTP).

Alan emphasised the need to move beyond partisanship and urged President-Elect Mahama to prioritise stabilising the macroeconomy.

He recommended investing in the real sector, particularly industrialisation, agriculture, and tourism, to generate employment opportunities. Additionally, he called for a robust campaign against corruption and illegal mining (GALAMSEY).

In response, John Mahama commended Alan Kyerematen, describing him as a political heavyweight with a forward-thinking approach to national issues. The President-Elect expressed regret over the internal politics within the ruling NPP that led to Alan’s departure but extended his best wishes to the party.

He also highlighted that the NDC shares similar goals outlined in the GTP and recognized its transformative potential. Mr. Mahama openly stated that any ideas adopted from the GTP would be credited to Alan.

On the critical issue of galamsey, Mr. Mahama acknowledged the existence of robust policies and regulations but pointed out significant challenges in their implementation. He emphasized that political interference has worsened the situation, making it more difficult to tackle effectively. Both leaders concurred on the urgent need for genuine and sustained efforts to eliminate galamsey, given its severe environmental and economic repercussions.

The meeting marked a rare moment of political civility and collaboration. Alan Kyerematen’s vision of fostering unity through constructive engagement resonated with the former president, who agreed that Ghana’s development must transcend partisan divides. The two leaders exchanged ideas on addressing the country’s pressing challenges through a cooperative and inclusive approach.

As a symbol of partnership and shared dedication, Alan Kyerematen presented a copy of his Great Transformational Plan (GTP) to Mahama. This gesture demonstrated a willingness to share innovative strategies and expertise to advance national progress. Alan expressed hope that the GTP would inspire collective action in addressing Ghana’s socioeconomic challenges.
