The alarming state of street lighting in Garden City, Kumasi, demands immediate attention. A recent visit by Daily Searchlight revealed that all street bulbs along the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) link road to the Ahodwo roundabout and the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) route are non-functional, plunging the area into total darkness and compromising safety and security.
Furthermore, most street bulbs along the Angloga Junction to Ahodwo roundabout route are also not functioning.
Safety Concerns and Criminal Activities
The lack of streetlights has created an environment conducive to criminal activities, posing a significant risk to residents and visitors. Pedestrians and motorists are navigating through dark roads, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries. Residents of Danyame and Nhyiaeso are sounding the alarm over a surge in robbery incidents on the stretch between KMA and RCC due to the lack of streetlights. According to them, the area has become a hub for armed robbers, making it perilous for people to walk around at night.
Residents’ Concerns
Patience Mensah, a resident and trader, stated that the absence of streetlights has forced market women to close their stalls early, around 4 pm, to avoid attacks. “When it’s 6 pm, you can’t walk around,” she said, adding that the stretch has been neglected despite being a route frequently used by leaders.
Madam Patricia, another resident, corroborated the claims, stating that the streetlights have been broken for five months without any attempts to repair them. She expressed concern about the lack of security presence in the area, leaving residents vulnerable to attacks.
Call To Action
The residents are now calling on the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boasiako, and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, to fix the streetlights and ensure proper security in the area.
