Severe Hardship Under Akufo-Addo Fuelling Ritual Killings, Robberies – Kale Caeser

The untold hardship and hunger fuelled by the bad policies of the Akufo-Addo government have resulted in escalating crimes across the country, says the Deputy Director of Research for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kale Caeser.

In the past month, there have been dozens of reports of murders by individuals and killings perpetrated by highway robbers in the country, leading to security experts raising serious concerns about the security of the citizens.

Last weekend, many robberies were recorded including the killing of an international journalist, Syed Taaley Ahmed, who was working with a crew from the London-based Muslim TV.

Two suspected robbers in connection with the killing of the journalist along the Kintampo-Buipe-Tamale Highway have been arrested for their alleged involvement in some robberies and killings in the area.

Although the police have been successful in arresting several suspected criminals in the past two weeks, Mr Caeser believes the situation is unprecedented and must be checked to ensure safety for Ghanaians.

Speaking on Inside Politics hosted by Mugabe Maase on Power 97.9 FM, the former deputy minister for the Upper West region blamed the rise of the criminal activities on the “bad governance of Nana Akufo-Addo.”

“Official report indicates that from January to June this year, about 300 people have been murdered, but Mugabe you know what, this is not the true figure. People who have been reported missing are more than 100,” he noted.

He said the president should have been able to charge the security agencies to be on their toes and deal ruthlessly with criminals by now, wondering why Mr Akufo-Addo has not reacted to the dangerous development in the country.

“Armed robbery has heightened. An international journalist was shot recently and till now the president has not been able to say anything about his gruesome murder,” he stated and contended that the government’s response to such issues can help tackle the canker.

He also admonished the Christian and Muslim leaders to do well to use their platforms to talk about the recent spike in crimes in the country.

“Our clergy should not be only talking about homosexuality but they should channel their energy to also talking about the insecurity in the country,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research, Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Professor. Kwesi Aning, has predicted that Ghana will continue to witness an increase in crimes.

His claim is based on the premise that crime is fast becoming a profitable venture in the country, hence leading to an increase in crimes being witnessed across the country.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, the security expert said “Crime has become such a profitable venture in this country that we just don’t know what to do.”

He explained that when violence becomes currency in any society such that those who are more violent get economic benefits and advantages, such a society becomes a stage for crime, saying “Violence has become a currency that those who are more violent have much currency in society.”

For him, “We are going to see more of this (crimes),” pointing out that the issue of small arms, for instance, ought to be properly tackled.
