Tollbooth Workers March, Petition Parliament To Restore Toll Payment

Spread the love

Tollbooth workers in the Greater Accra region demonstrated on Monday, 30 November 2021 over the government’s decision to abolish tolls, which has rendered them jobless.

According to them, the directive from the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, is having an adverse impact on their livelihoods.

Mr Amoako-Atta directed that nobody should pay tolls across the country after the government, through the finance minister, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, proposed plans to scrap the payment of tolls in the 2022 budget.

Mr Amoako-Atta issued the directive although parliament has not yet approved the budget.

The workers marched through some principal streets of Accra and presented a petition to parliament.

They are calling on parliament to act immediately to reverse the decision to scrap payment of tolls.

The petition was received by the deputy majority chief whip Habib Iddrisu on behalf of parliament.

Habib Iddrisu after receiving the petition explained the circumstances surrounding the immediate cessation of the road tolls and assured the petitioners that the house will consider their request
