University of Ghana Suspends All Social Gatherings Amid COVID-19 Resurgence

The University of Ghana has announced an immediate suspension of all social gatherings on campus in response to a recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

This comes after the university on Monday, June 23, confirmed a resurgence of COVID-19 cases on campus, urging members of the university community to take immediate precautionary measures.

In a statement issued on Thursday, June 26, the health directorate of the university disclosed that both suspected and confirmed cases have been reported within the university environment, prompting a reactivation of health protocols and heightened vigilance.

“All staff, students, and visitors are strongly advised to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the recommended preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection and community spread,” the statement noted.

In a new directive, the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, directed all student bodies—including the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and departmental and school associations—to halt all scheduled events and week celebrations until further notice.

According to the statement signed by Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs, the decision is a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding the health and well-being of the university community.

“These measures have become necessary to safeguard the health and well-being of the University community,” the notice emphasised.

The university authorities have urged students and campus organisations to comply fully with the directive and support efforts to contain the spread of the virus.
