‘We Are Suffering’ – Bimbilla SHS Students Cry For Help Amid Severe Water Crisis

Students of Bimbilla Senior High School in the Northern Region are raising serious concerns over the ongoing water crisis, which is negatively affecting their education.

Many students spend long hours searching for water, often missing lectures as a result. Some even risk their lives crossing the busy Eastern Corridor Highway in front of the school in search of potable water.

The persistent water shortage in Bimbilla, within the Nanumba North Municipality, has reached a critical stage, significantly impacting the well-being and academic performance of students at Bimbilla Senior High School.

The crisis has forced students to move around town at dawn and late at night, carrying gallons in search of water. Some students even go days without bathing.

Speaking to Channel One News, students shared how the situation is affecting them.

“The main challenge here at Bimbilla Senior High School is water. We face serious difficulties accessing water, and this is seriously affecting our studies. We lose concentration in class—sometimes, the teacher will be teaching, and you will see students sleeping, all because they spent long hours searching for water.”

“The water crisis in Bimbilla is very serious, and we, the students, are affected the most. At dawn or in the evening, we are all over town searching for water instead of focusing on our studies. The government must come to our aid—we are suffering.”

One of the greatest dangers students face is crossing the highway in search of water. According to them, a colleague was recently hit by a speeding vehicle. The exhaustion from these daily struggles makes it difficult for them to concentrate in class.

In a heartfelt appeal, students called on the government, philanthropists, and organizations to intervene urgently.

“We are unable to concentrate on our studies because we spend most of our time searching for water. We are appealing to the government, philanthropists, and NGOs to urgently assist us in getting a reliable water supply for the school.”

Despite several efforts by the school’s management, little progress has been made in resolving the crisis. The school’s location makes it difficult to access groundwater, as previous attempts to drill boreholes have failed. Additionally, the town’s main water supply is unreliable, with pipes flowing only once every two weeks or even longer.

Senior Housemaster, Mr. Tanko Awesu, spoke to Channel One News about the challenges and efforts made to secure a stable water supply.

“Yes, the main challenge of the school is water. It’s a serious concern for us, and management is not ignoring it. Several attempts have been made to secure a reliable water supply for the school, but all have failed. Sometimes, even in the kitchen, we rely on water tankers, but the cost is very high. One concerned resident of Bimbilla, Alhaji Salam, has tried to help, but we are still unable to get a stable water source.”

He further explained that while the school recently addressed its security concerns by completing a perimeter wall, water remains its biggest challenge.

“First, our challenge was the school wall because students used to sneak out, and outsiders also intruded. Now that we have completed the wall, that issue has been resolved. Our main challenge now is water.”

He joined the students in appealing for urgent support.

“We are making a passionate appeal to the government and other well-meaning individuals to come to the aid of the school. Our main challenge is water—we need assistance.”

The water crisis is not only affecting students but also residents of Bimbilla, who are also struggling to access clean water. Some community members expressed their concerns and sympathized with the students.

“There is a serious water crisis here in Bimbilla. We always struggle for water, but our biggest concern is for the students. Their colleagues elsewhere are busy studying, while they are constantly searching for water. We are appealing to the government to take action and address this crisis.”

“The students are always struggling, moving all over town in search of water. The government should intervene and help them.”

A caretaker at one of the main water sources used by students explained how he prioritizes their needs.

“Every time the students come here for water, I sometimes have to appeal to residents to allow me to serve them first. They stay here until 9 or 10 p.m., and it’s a very worrying situation for us.”

Previously, security was a major concern at Bimbilla SHS due to the lack of a school wall, which allowed unrestricted movement of students and outsiders. However, with the construction of the perimeter wall, that issue has been resolved.

Now, the lack of water remains the school’s most pressing problem.

Students and school management are urgently appealing to the government, charitable organizations, and well-meaning individuals to help provide a sustainable water source for the school.

Additionally, drivers and motorists have been urged to exercise caution when approaching the school to ensure the safety of students crossing the road in search of water.
