The Akwamuhene of Bekwai, Nana Ntiamoah Amankuo III, has weighed in on the ongoing galamsey crisis in Ghana, attributing blame to traditional leaders. According to him, chiefs should be held accountable for the illegal mining activities in their areas, regardless of their involvement.
Nana Amankuo III expressed concern that chiefs in areas affected by galamsey seem to be turning a blind eye to the activities, which could be interpreted as tacit approval. He condemned the destruction of lands and the impact on local communities.
The Akwamuhene also commented on the public’s outrage against chiefs over galamsey issues, stating that their reactions are justified given the chiefs’ inaction. “If chiefs allow galamseyers to take over their lands without taking action, it means they are okay with the activities,” he said.
Despite the criticism, Nana Amankuo III applauded the government’s efforts to combat galamsey. He pledged the support of chiefs for initiatives aimed at curbing illegal mining activities in the country.
The Akwamuhene’s comments come amid growing concerns about the galamsey crisis and its devastating impact on the environment and local communities. His statement highlights the need for collective action to address the issue.
