More than sixty youth from the Bawku West District in the Upper East Region have been sensitized on the activities of violent extremists, the signals and how to prevent the heinous acts from penetrating into Ghana. The District Director of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Alengah Muniru charged the youth to be ambassadors of peace in the District.
He reiterated the need for religious and opinion leaders to include the youth fully in joint community projects. This he said is geared towards the ultimate goal of creating togetherness in the District.
Mr. Alengah noted that the border towns had already made the Bawku West District vulnerable and the activities of Islamic militant in Burkina Faso has worsened their plight, hence the need for all to be vigilant.
The Bawku West District Coordinating Director (DCD),Mr Ahmed Alhassan expressed gratitude to the NCCE and partners for the chance given to the youth in the area to help protect the people.
The Bawku West District Police commander, Assistant superintendent of Police (ASP) Jackson Kporture stressed on the need for urgent creation of community watch dog committees in their neighborhoods to supplement the effort of the Police.
ASP Kporture explained that section 12 of the 1992 constitution allows a civilian to arrest a person committing a crime and handed over to the police immediately without delay. A resident of Soogo, a suburb of Zebilla was not happy how strangers get into their communities.
He said it was dangerous and suggested the need for the police to create a check point where such characters will be thoroughly checked before entering Ghana. A representative of the Catholic Church, Mr. Akumasi Anthony reminded the youth to always look at the discomfort of the asylum seekers in Ghana and constantly engage in acts that will bring peace and unity.
The youth pledged their willingness to support the stakeholders in ensuring peace and unity in Bawku West and beyond.
