Morocco, the reigning champion of the African Nations for Championships (CHAN) and Ghana’s Group C opponents, has withdrawn from this year’s competition.
They pull out just one day before the biennial competition, which will be held in Algeria, begins.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FMRF) said in a statement on Thursday: The Moroccan Football Selection is unable to travel to Constantine (Algeria) to play the 7th edition of the African Nations Football Championship which will be organized in Algeria from January 13 to February 4, 2023 (CHAN 2022) and defend his title insofar as the final authorization for his Royal Air Maroc (RAM) flight, the official carrier of the Moroccan Football Selections, from Rabat to Constantine has not been confirmed.”
Ironically, their decision to leave the competition follows a dispute with the host nation over travel arrangements.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FMRF) insisted on a direct flight from Rabat to Constantine notwithstanding the suspension of direct flights between the two nations due to tensions.
Groups D and E originally had Angola, Mali and Mauritania and Cameroon, Congo, Niger respectively. However, Ghana, Madagascar and Sudan in Group C, now join the list.
