The Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Emmanuel Kwadwo Wiredu has admonished Ghanaians to uphold and defend the 1992 Constitution against all forms of abuse and violations so as to ensure the sustenance of Ghana’s Fourth Republican Democracy.
He intimated that Ghana has come a very long way in her democracy experiment and that the successes attained within the last thirty years far outweigh the shortcomings, therefore all Ghanaians must rally behind the defense of the Constitution and for that matter, Ghana’s young democracy. He said the political stability enjoyed over the past thirty years has brought about stable socio-economic development, a feat the past three republican regimes could not attain and should not be toyed with by the citizenry.
Mr. Wiredu made these comments during a media interaction at Nkawie as part of his outfit’s activities towards the commemoration of theThirtieth Anniversary of the Fourth Republican Democratic dispensation on the theme ‘Thirty Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy: Building National Cohesion through Civic Education and Participation in Local Governance’.
The NCCE Municipal Director reminded Ghanaians of their duty towards the defense of the 1992 Constitution as enshrined in Articles 3(4) and 41 (b) of the Constitution. He explained that Ghanaians are enjoined by these provisions to ‘uphold and defend the Constitution all forms of abuse and violations’ and also to ‘resist any person or group of persons seeking to abrogate or overthrow the Constitution’.
Responding to recent calls by a section of the public for a new Constitution, Mr. Wiredu stated that the Constitution is a living document and that to meet new trends and dictates as time passes by, it could be subjected to periodic review to take on new additions and subtractions instead of being thrown away in entirety for a new one. He therefore called on all well-meaning Ghanaians to support the call for a wholistic review of the 1992 Constitution and avoid tendencies that have the potential to mar the stability of the nation as well as sustenance of Ghana’s democratic credentials.
He said the NCCE is committed to its Mission of Promoting and sustaining Ghana’s democracy and inculcating in the citizenry the awareness of their rights and obligations as a free people. He therefore called on corporate Ghana to extend support to the Commission in the discharge of its mandate to the good people of Ghana.
