The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Foundation has made a donation of GH¢50,000 to former Black Stars Coach Sellas Tetteh, to assist the ailing tactician who has been out of work for over one year.

The  donation followed the launch in Accra last Tuesday of the GFA Foundation, the social investment and sustainability management unit of the FA (the vehicle through which the football body will coordinate and drive its charity projects and Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives).

The delegation to the coach’s residence was led by the GFA President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, and included the FA’s Chief of Staff, Michael Osekere; Greater Accra Regional Football Association Chairman, Samuel Aboabire, and a Director of the GFA Foundation, Malcolm Frazier Appeadu.

According to the FA president, the establishment of the foundation was inspired by a desire and commitment by the current FA leadership to enhance the living conditions of former footballers and other important stakeholders who might be in needy situations as a result of old age, ill health, injury or general deprivation.

Committed service

He paid glowing tributes to Coach Sellas Tetteh, the 2009 CAF African Coach of the Year, for his “invaluable and committed service” to the nation, having guided Ghana to win the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, as well as served as assistant coach of the Black Stars during Ghana’s maiden appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2006.

“I am happy to see to see you in good health,” he told the cheerful-looking former coach of Liberty Professionals, as well as the national teams of Sierra Leone and Rwanda.

Mr Simeon-Okraku said even though the FA was concerned about the welfare of the ailing coach, neither the GFA nor the Ministry of Youth and Sports owed Coach Tetteh outstanding bonuses and salaries as had been erroneously reported in the media.

He stressed that all entitlements due the coach, including vehicles promised the team after the FIFA U-20 World Cup triumph, had been fulfilled by the State.

GFA Foundation objectives

For his part, Mr Appeadu said the donation was a manifestation of the GFA Foundation’s strategic objective of improving lives and livelihoods of football people and communities.

“We are not even a week old, but we felt it was absolutely necessary to come to you with the foundation’s widow’s mite to facilitate your complete recovery and also towards your upkeep,” he said.

Coach Tetteh expressed his gratitude to the FA leadership and the foundation for the visit and the donation.

He was also grateful for the immense benevolence Ghanaians had shown him.

A family member informed the GFA delegation that the coach was now fit, healthy and able to drive and personally handle his normal duties.
