Traditional Council vehemently denies claim that galamsey led to destruction of Akufo-Addo’s garden

The Kyebi Traditional Council has vehemently denied claim that galamsey activity led to the destruction of President Akufo-Addo’s garden in Kyebi.

Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, in a supposed report, claimed that galamsey activities led to the president’s garden in Kyebi also being destroyed.

But speaking to the media, the chief of Kyebi, Osabarima Marfo Kwabre said the report is untrue and wants Prof Frimpong-Boateng to retract and apologise.

Osabarima Marfo Kwabre said the Kyebi Traditional Council finds it insulting that the president, who has promised to address the issue of illegal mining, would rather allow his compound to be used for the same activity.

“There is nothing like that here [Kyebi]…what Prof Frimpong-Boateng said in his report is totally wrong. There’s nothing like that. We are very uncomfortable [about the report] … the man [President Akufo-Add] has built his name over the years and just when he’s about leaving power, you want to destroy him…”

Osabarima Marfo Kwabre also described the report as “serious propaganda” and challenged Prof Frimpong-Boateng to go to Kyebi and show them [traditional council] where exactly he is talking.

“I wonder why people with high positions can bring themselves so low to that extent of telling lies…I don’t see the point because there is a house here with trees in it up to this point, and I’m not sure how we were able to dig the gold, remove the trees, and replace them.”

“So the trees speak for us, and I don’t believe we need to. The trees and the environment speak for themselves,” he added.

Residents of Kyebi: It is impossible to mine in the president’s house

Residents of Kyebi in the Eastern Region have rubbished claims by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng in his recently leaked report to the Chief of Staff that illegal mining activities close to the private residence of President Akufo-Addo in Kyebi have led to the destruction of some portions of the president’s garden.

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, in his supposed report, claimed as follows: “The impunity in the Eastern Region is exemplified by near unbelievable activity in Kyebi

“I had a telephone call from Eric Antwi of the Office of the President, and he narrated that the youth organizer of the NPP in Kyebi was excavating for gold in a field close to the house of H.E. the President of the Republic.

“When we checked, it was true. Indeed, part of the garden of the president had been affected. Apparently, the president did not know about this. We quickly dispatched a bulldozer and an excavator to the area to reclaim the land and vegetate it. I need not say that nothing happened to the local youth organizer who caused the damage”

But speaking to Asaase News on Thursday, 27 April 2023 during a visit to the president’s house, some indigenes of Kyebi said a careful look at the location of the president’s house in Kyebi should tell anyone that the house is right in the heart of the town with several other houses close by and it is, therefore, practically impossible for anyone to carry out mining operations anywhere around the house.

They also pointed out that since the president assumed office in January 2017, security detail from the Ghana Armed Forces, the police and Ghana Immigration Service have been stationed at the house and so it beats their imagination how anyone can bypass such security presence to engage in illegal mining at the president’s property.

“According to him, one Eric Asante at the Office of the President called him and informed him about that. Now, if the professor had ended on that and did not go on, we will probably have said maybe the professor should have followed up and seen for himself.

“But he said he followed up. So is it the case that he does not actually know the President’s house, or he just wants to peddle falsehood?” one of the indigenes quizzed.

“As you can see, do you see any evidence of a bulldozer here at the president’s house? There is nothing of that sort that has taken place here.

“So we are astonished by that part of the report because we stay in this area and we know that what the professor is talking about is nothing but palpable falsehood,” the Kyebi resident further stated.

Another resident, Elvis Boakye Yiadom, on his part, said, “We are all from this place and my house is near the president’s house. We always patronize this area. There is no Galamsey activity here. “

“[I think the professor is aggrieved because he was not reappointed to his position, and that is the reason why he is talking in the manner he did]” Boakye Yiadom added.
