Due to persistent droughts, residents of Bomase Dorse, a farming community close to Sekesua in the upper Manya Korobo district of the eastern region, are experiencing acute water shortages.
According to the locals, their only water source, a stream, frequently runs dry, and they only have access to dirty water when it rains.
The Assistant Sub Chief of Bomase Dorse, Nene Kenney Stephen, stated that they are having problems with water in the enclave. He claimed that when the creek dries up, it usually causes a drought, but even then, it can’t support them for very long, making things more challenging.
“We dig in the stream when it dries up because of the difficulty, but there are many reptiles there, including snakes, that could risk our lives.”
Nene Stephen requested assistance from non-governmental organizations and other charitable organizations by drilling a borehole for them.
According to Madam Veronica, who is a resident, the distance she must travel to fetch water has a negative impact on her business because it requires her to spend more time at home, and by the time she arrives at the sekesua or asesewa market, her customers have already made purchases from other vendors, a situation she deemed unprofitable.
Mr. Tekpertey Abraham, Assemblyman for Bomase-Sekesua Electoral Area, said that the community is in desperate need of water and that it has become a challenge that is affecting the community’s natives.
He went on to say that the yellowish gallon, also known as the Kuffour gallon, is sold at 1 cedi for water at Sekesua, and the tricycle charges 3 cedis per gallon of water, totaling 4 cedis, a situation he described as very worrying.
According to Mr. Tekpertey, their spouses have been separating from them as a result of the struggles women in the neighborhood face before they can obtain water.
Yet, having to walk two miles to get to their destination for household duties and farm irrigation purposes has caused a few marriages to fail.
In addition, he stated that the contaminated water they have been relying on for years is to blame for the cases of typhoid fever that have been reported.
He revealed that children walk a long distance before getting access to water, but this has resulted in a large number of students dropping out of school because, by the time they return and get ready for school, they are late and are afraid of being whipped by their teachers, so they will not even consider going to school.
He urged President Akuffo ADDO, philanthropists, and other organizations to support the neighborhood.
Sustainable Development Goal 6, which says Ensure access to water and sanitation for all, The most fundamental human need for health and well-being is access to clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene. If development doesn’t triple, billions of people will lack access to these essential services by 2030. Rapid population expansion, urbanization, and increased water requirements from the agricultural, industrial, and energy sectors are all contributing to an increase in demand for water.
Water stress has been made worse by years of abuse, bad management, excessive groundwater exploitation, and tainted freshwater supplies. As a result of climate change, deteriorating water-related ecosystems, underinvestment in water and sanitation, and inadequate collaboration on transboundary waterways, countries are also confronting an increasing number of difficulties.
The current rates of advancement would need to quadruple by 2030 in order to provide universal access to drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene.
