The Ahafo Regional Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Mr. Oduro Seth, has admonished supporters of the party to eschew any act that makes the party unattractive as they elect a Flagbearer to lead the elephant family into the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
According to Mr. Oduro, the United Party that the NPP traces its roots to has a record of always securing electoral victory whenever the party is strong and united behind its leader.
Elaborating on his point, Mr. Oduro mentioned that when the Progress Party was strong, it won the August 29, 1969, Presidential election, but when there was disunity, the Popular Front Party, its offshoot party, could not win the June 18, 1979, Presidential election because the party could not present itself to Ghanaians as a formidable, well-organised entity that could win the trust of the people, even though the prevailing conditions at the time clearly signalled the need for change.
“Our forefathers, the Progress Peoples Party, won the August 29, 1969, Presidential election when they were united. Unfortunately, on June 18, 1979, the PFP that came from our tradition lost the Presidential election because we were not united, and Ghanaians at the time did not see the need to entrust their destinies into the hands of the group of people they saw as not united, even though the need for change was very glaring,” he stated.
He indicated that, after the Sunyani Congress in 1998, the main players, recognising how disunity caused us in 1979, this time around quickly put all their differences behind them and presented a very “Strong and attractive Elephan” to the good people of Ghana in the 2000 election that the party won.
He continued by saying that, as if the party forgot about its past, it painfully lost power in 2008 when it allowed disunity to resurface after the Presidential Primary Contest at Legon in 2007 in spite of all the beautiful policies and programmes that H.E. J. A. Kuffour’s government had implemented. He added that the first-round results of the 2008 presidential election clearly showed that Ghanaians did not want the party to go into opposition, yet it landed there.
Mr. Oduro asserted that, when the party once again presented “A Strong Elephant,” it was able to come back to power in 2017.
“In 1998, we went to the Sunyani Congress to elect a leader, and after that, the leaders of our party, recognising how disunity caused us in 1979, quickly came together and presented a very strong elephant that was attractive to Ghanaians, and they voted for it.”
“Unfortunately, we allowed disunity to resurface in 2007 after the Legon Congress, and we lost power. We lost that election by the skin of our teeth. We even won the first round. That clearly shows Ghanaians did not want us to go to the opposition. And in 2016, another strong and attractive elephant won us victory again when we were united. So this clearly tells us that it is only when the party is strong that we win power,” he emphasised.
Mr. Oduro has therefore advised supporters of the party, especially the young ones following the ten aspirants in the party’s Presidential election, to be decent in their actions and deeds so that the elephant will continue to be healthy ahead of the 2024 polls.
