The Eastern regional security council, led by the regional minister, Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong, has warned residents in Nsawam Adoagyiri to refrain from holding both registered and unregistered arms or weapons to avoid being treated as criminals by the security agencies.
The new directives, according to the regional minister, will ensure peace and restore law and order following an alleged chieftaincy dispute that led to the shooting of some innocent residents in the area.
The Eastern Regional Minister has confirmed that so far, two people have died as a result of a shooting incident that took place at Nsawam Adoagyiri on Monday evening.
Hon. Seth Acheampong reveals that five people sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Nsawam and Koforidua Central hospitals on Tuesday following a renewed chieftaincy dispute in the area.
The minister, addressing the media on Thursday after the incident, said that currently, it’s unlawful to hold or brandish weapons in Adoagyiri; thus, failure to adhere to the new directives will agitate the security agencies at the scene to handle such recalcitrants as criminals.
Seth Acheampong, speaking to Afeema News, emphasized that it’s important to give prior notice to the police before assembling any special events, as mandated by the Ghanaian constitution.
While the police in the area are ensuring law and order, the Eastern Regional Security Council has called on residents in the affected areas in Nsawam Adoagyiri municipality to remain calm and abide by the new security measures for peace to prevail.
According to the minister, the security agencies in the municipality and the region at large have launched an intensive investigation into the shooting incident with the assurance that the perpetrators would be brought to face the rigorous standards of the law.
