The management of AHENKAN FM has noted with deep regret an unfortunate assault and manhandle of AKYEMANSA FM, Mr. Nicholas Morka, on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at the Akyem Oda Post Office in the Birim Central Municipal Assembly while the latter was on his way to cover an event.
The management condemns the attack on Mr. Nicholas Morka in no uncertain terms. The conduct of the joint military and customs officers who attacked and manhandled the journalist is highly irresponsible and has no place in this era of democracy.
The subjecting of journalists or media houses to any form of attack, be it intimidation or harassment for doing their journalistic work by some politicians, security personnel, or civilians, is simply not welcoming and should be discarded.
We therefore call on the Ministry of Information, the National Media Commission, the Ghana Journalists Association, and the like to intervene quickly while the Ghana Police Service brings all the perpetrators to book to serve as a deterrent to potential offenders. Journalism is not a crime.
We again pray for the Ministry of Defense and Customs Division of Ghana to launch an independent investigation into the aforementioned incident since it involves your officers to protect your core identity as a peace lover and a respecter of democracy and human rights.
Thank you.
