Nationwide Curfew Declared In Sierra Leone After Unknown Men Attempt To Break Into Military Armory

The government of Sierra Leone has declared a nationwide curfew on Sunday, November 26.

This was after some unidentified individuals attempted to break into the military armory at Wilberforce barracks in the early hours of Sunday, November 26 .

 

 

The suspects “have all been rebuffed,” a statement issued by authorities said.

“The public is assured that our government and state security forces are in control.

“To enable the security forces to continue the process of apprehending the suspects a nationwide curfew is declared with immediate effect across the country. We strongly advise citizens to stay indoors,” the statement stressed.

 

 

President Maada Bio

The President of Sierra Leone Julius Maada Bio in an address to the Nation on the security breach at the Military barracks in Freetown, reiterated his government’s determination to protect democracy and the peace of the country.

“I bring you greetings from the Presidential Lodge in Freetown. In the early hours of this morning, there was a breach of security at the Military Barracks at Wilberforce in Freetown, as some unidentified individuals attacked the military armoury.

“However, they were repelled by our gallant Security Forces and calm has been restored. As the combined team of our Security Forces continues to route out the remnant of the fleeing renegades, a nationwide curfew has been declared and citizens are encouraged to stay indoors” President Julius Maada Bio stated.

“The peace of our beloved nation is priceless and we shall continue to protect the peace and security of Sierra Leone against the forces that wish to truncate our much-cherished stability.

“We remain resolute in our determination to protect democracy in Sierra Leone and I urge all Sierra Leoneans to unite towards this collective responsibility. Long Live The Republic of Sierra Leone” Maada Bio further stated.

 

 

 

ECOWAS statement

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in a statement said it “has learnt with utter disgust a plot by certain individuals to acquire arms and disturb the peace and constitutional order in Sierra Leone”.

“ECOWAScondemns this act and calls for the arrest and prosecution of all participants in this illegal act. ECOWAS reiterates its zero-tolerance for unconstitutional change of government” the statement read.

“ECOWAS further underscores its commitment to supporting the people and government of Sierra to deepen democracy and good governance, consolidate peace and security as well as foster socio-economic development” the ECOWAS Commission statement further read.
