Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, has stirred more controversy by defying a summons by the Kumasi Traditional Council over some alleged derogatory comments he made against its members.
Mr. Ampaw said that he felt disrespected and prejudged by the council, which had accused him of disgracing the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the chiefs of the Ashanti Region.
He said that he had worked for Otumfuo before and that he had a good relationship with him. He said that Otumfuo had sent for him in 2013 through the Tepahene, and that he had given him an assignment, which he had performed well.
He said that he was shocked and saddened by the way he was treated by the council, which had called him a ‘gutter’ lawyer and had insulted him on social media.
He said that he had also been attacked by his enemies, including the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who had also been summoned by the council for allegedly disrespecting Otumfuo.
He said that he did not see any reason to appear before the council, which had already judged him and had threatened to kill him.
He said that he was a lawyer of 25 years, with high moral character, proven integrity, and no misconduct. He said that he had educated the whole Ghana in 2012 and 2013, and that he was competent enough.
He said that he was not afraid of the council and that he was protected by the constitution of Ghana, which was bigger than anybody, including Otumfuo.
He said that he was not a bad lawyer and that he had not said anything wrong. He said that he was only defending Chairman Wontumi, who had been accused of making some comments about Otumfuo’s role in the 2020 election petition.
He said that he respected Otumfuo and that he hoped that he would intervene and resolve the matter amicably.
Embattled foul-mouthed lawyer with strong leanings towards the NPP, Maurice Ampaw, has in an interview with an Accra-based radio station, vowed not to honour the invitation of a summon issued against him by the Asanteman Traditional Council, despite his earlier stance to show up.
