The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries were held on Saturday, January 27, and were characterized by surprise and disappointment as numerous prominent incumbents saw their bids for re-election dashed

In addition to the 19 sitting members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who decided not to run for office again, over 20 other candidates were eliminated in Saturday’s primary elections.

Tano North

In a major upset, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Freda Prempeh, was ousted in the Tano North constituency. Challenger Dr. Gideon Boako, Spokesperson for the Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, cruised to victory with 444 votes against Prempeh’s 221.

Dome-Kwabenya

Similarly, Dome-Kwabenya witnessed a stunning defeat for Adwoa Safo, the outspoken Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection. Mike Ocquaye Jr., son of former Speaker Mike Ocquaye, secured a convincing win with 1194 votes, leaving Safo with only 328.

Abuakwa North

The Abuakwa North constituency also saw a change of guard, with incumbent Gifty Twum-Ampofo narrowly losing to Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong. Popularly known as “Buffalo,” Addo-Frempong garnered 222 votes compared to Twum-Ampofo’s 202.

Weija Gbawe

Beyond these significant upsets, another high-profile casualty was Deputy Minister of Health, Tina Gifty Mensah. In the Weija Gbawe constituency, she was defeated by Jerry Ahmed Shab, who polled 786 votes to Mensah’s 361.

Atwima Nwabiagya South

COP(Retired) George Tuffuor polled 324 votes against 209 votes for the incumbent Hon Emmanuel Agyei Anwhire, 395 votes for the victor Madam Shirley Kyei, and 6 votes for Dr Dennis Addo.

By the results, the incumbent MP has been toppled by a first-timer female candidate who has since been duly declared the NPP’s parliamentary candidate in the 2024 polls.

Meanwhile, 940 Delegates cast their Votes in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency with 35 Delegates absent

Atwima Mponua

The incumbent Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, has been defeated in the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary elections by Mr Seth Osei Akoto, the Director of Crop Services Directorate at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA),

Mr. Seth Osei Akoto polled 375  votes against 330 votes for the incumbent Isaac Kwame Asiamah, 72  votes for Mr Osei Bonsu,  and 247 votes for John Dawnne Ofori-Atta.

Juaben Constituency

Minerals Consultant Francis Owusu-Akyaw has been declared the winner of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries in the Juaben Constituency.

He polled 334 of the total votes, defeating sitting MP and Deputy Communications Minister Ama Pomaa Boateng who secured 120 votes.

These unexpected defeats sent shockwaves through the NPP and raised questions about voter sentiment and future party dynamics.

Minister for Public Enterprises, Joseph Cudjoe lost the Effia primary in the Western Region to Isaac Nyarko Boamah, a financial analyst
