Disappointment and surprise marked the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries on Saturday, January 27, as several prominent incumbents saw their bids for re-election dashed.

Seventeen (17) incumbent MPs retained their positions, with eight (8) incumbents losing in the Ashanti Region.

In a major upset, former Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, was ousted in the Atwima Mponua constituency. Challenger Mr Seth Osei Akoto, the Director of Crop Services Directorate at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), cruised to victory with 375 votes against Asiamah’s 330 votes.

Similarly, Juaben Constituency witnessed a stunning defeat for Ama Pomaa Boateng, the sitting MP and Deputy Communications Minister. A Minerals Consultant, Francis Owusu-Akyaw, secured a convincing win with 334 of the total votes, leaving Pomaa with only 120.

The Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency also saw a change of guard, with incumbent Hon Emmanuel Agyei Anwhire narrowly losing to Madam Shirley Maame Tiwaa Kyei, Deputy CEO for the Minerals Commission. She garnered 395 votes, compared to Agyei Anwhire’s 209 and COP (Retired) George Tuffuor polled 324 votes.
