Offinso, a typically serene town, was jolted into a state of shock and apprehension on Tuesday as a banners was displayed by individuals believed to be members of the “Offinso Youth Association.”
The banners, boldly proclaiming their message, read: “OFFINSO YOUTH ASSOCIATION DOESN’T WANT TO SEE DR. K.K SARPONG (OGYEDOM GYAN FRIMPONG II) AND NANA AMOAKO (DWAMENA AKENTEN II) AT OFFINSO PALACE. WE DON’T NEED TWO CHIEFS AT OFFINSO. NANA AMA NYARKO IS THE ONLY GAZETTED QUEEN-MOTHER OF OFFINSO.”
The youths have purportedly banned these individuals from presenting themselves as the Paramount Chief of the Offinso Traditional Area, arguing that their presence and claims to the throne are unauthorized and illegitimate.
This development has not only stirred discontent but also escalated fear and uncertainty among the residents of Offinso.
The palpable tension was evident in the recent violent confrontation that occurred on Sunday, May 12, 2024.
The clash, which saw residents and some local chiefs embroiled in a fierce battle, forced many to flee for their lives.
The chaos reached such an extent that numerous residents, predominantly women, sought refuge in nearby houses, pleading with occupants to shelter them from the turmoil.
The violent exchange has left an indelible mark of dread among the populace.
The sight of the provocative banner has only compounded their fears, leading to urgent calls for round-the-clock protection from the authorities.
Residents now live in a heightened state of anxiety, uncertain about what might unfold next.
The roots of this conflict appear to stem from deeper issues related to traditional leadership and succession disputes within the Offinso Traditional Area.
The imposition of a ban by the youth association highlights the significant division and dissatisfaction among certain factions within the community.
Their insistence on recognizing only Nana Ama Nyarko as the legitimate queen-mother underscores the complexities of the chieftaincy institution in Offinso.
As the situation continues to unfold, it is imperative for local authorities and traditional council members to intervene promptly.
Ensuring dialogue and mediation between the conflicting parties might be the key to restoring peace and order in Offinso.
The call for 24-hour protection by the residents is a clear indication of the urgent need for security and stability in the area.
It remains to be seen how the authorities will address these grievances and navigate the intricate dynamics of traditional leadership disputes to bring lasting resolution to the troubled community of Offinso.
