Photos: Former EC Chair Charlotte Osei Installed As Warrior Chief ‘Safohen’

Charlotte Osei, the former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has been enstooled as the Safohen of Nkum Asafo Group number 4, a traditional title in the Oguaa Traditional Area of Cape Coast.

A Facebook post on June 8 by the former EC Chair suggests her stool name as Safohen Nana Ama Kesson.

She will lead the Nkum Asafo group 4 as a warrior during the Fetu Oguaa Afahye Festival in September this year.

 

 

Charlotte Osei was seen in pictures dressed like a Queen mother and holding a whip, a symbol of leadership in a post on her Facebook page.

 

 

Fetu Afahye is an annual festival celebrated by the people and chiefs of Cape Coast Traditional Area in the Central Region of Ghana.

 

 

The one-week long celebration will begin from September 1 to September 7 which will see all natives of the land travel from different walks of life to celebrate the festival.

Before the start of the Fetu Afahye celebrations, the Omanhene (paramount chief of the Oguaa) spends a week in confinement to confer with the gods.

A ban is placed on drumming, dancing, noise making and merriment within the municipality, while fishing in the Fosu Lagoon is forbidden at this period.

The Omanhene (Paramount chief) as part of the event, pours libation to the deity, Nana Fosu. The Omanhene then officially opens the lagoon by casting his net thrice into the waters this is to signify the lifting of the ban on lagoon fishing.

The grand day of the Fetu Afahye festival falls on the first Saturday in September as a procession takes place around the community with dancing and merrymaking.

Fetu Afahye marks the beginning of a new year for the Oguaa people of Cape Coast. The festival closes with an interdenominational service at the Chapel Square.

Charlotte Osei has also been appointed the chairperson of the Planning Committee for the 2024 Oguaa Fetu Festival, a role that underscores her influence and respect in the region.

Prior to her appointment as EC boss, Charlotte Osei served as the chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) from 2011 to 2015.

She is a lawyer and academic, having lectured at the University of Ghana, and has been recognized for her contributions to democracy and governance in Ghana.
