In a stunning upset, Sheikh Issah Salifu Taylor, an independent candidate, has been elected as the new Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tarkwa-Nsuaem constituency. According to provisional results from all 263 polling stations, Taylor secured 35,906 votes, representing 47.11%, to unseat incumbent MP George Mireku Duker of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mireku Duker, who has been serving as MP since 2016, garnered 27,404 votes, translating to 35.96%.¹ The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Joy Joycelyn Andoh, secured 12,903 votes, representing 16.93% of the valid votes cast.
Taylor’s victory marks a significant shift in voter sentiment, ending Mireku Duker’s eight-year tenure as MP. Following the announcement of the provisional results, Taylor expressed gratitude to his supporters and pledged to serve all constituents, irrespective of their political affiliations, and work toward achieving sustainable development in Tarkwa-Nsuaem.
