Dr. Patrick Essien, a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast and a renowned STEM/TVET expert, has advised the government to prioritize the establishment of free Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centers across the country.
According to Dr. Essien, the move is crucial in producing more skilled graduates who can drive Ghana’s economic growth and development. He emphasized that TVET education plays a vital role in equipping students with practical skills, making them more employable and entrepreneurial.
“Free TVET centers will not only increase access to vocational training but also reduce the financial burden on students and their families,” Dr. Essien stated. “This will enable more young people to acquire skills in areas such as technology, engineering, and agriculture, which are critical to Ghana’s economic development.”
Dr. Essien also highlighted the importance of TVET in addressing Ghana’s unemployment challenges. “By providing young people with relevant skills, we can reduce the number of unemployed youth and create a more productive workforce,” he said.
The government has been urged to collaborate with private sector organizations, NGOs, and international partners to establish and equip the TVET centers. Dr. Essien also emphasized the need for a comprehensive policy framework to support the development of TVET in Ghana.
This call from Dr.Essien came as President John Mahama promised to reset the nation from its economic struggles, increase productivity, and make unemployment a thing of the past.
To reset the economy, it can be done through robust and practical educational systems.
