Patriotic Youth Alliance Oppose Calls to Hold Presidential Primaries First

Patriotic Youth Alliance strongly expresses our opposition to recent suggestions that the party should conduct its Presidential Primaries before all other internal elections. In our response to remarks by Mr. Kwabena Agyapong, the youth group believes such a proposal threatens the democratic values, unity, and structural integrity of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

These are some key reasons why the we rejects this proposal:

1. Breach of Established Party Structure and Constitution

The NPP Constitution outlines a clear sequence for internal elections, beginning from polling stations to national executives, and finally to the presidential primaries. Any attempt to reverse this order sets a dangerous precedent and violates the democratic foundation that has held the party together for decades.

2. Grassroots Empowerment Must Come First

The strength of the NPP lies in its vibrant grassroots. Electing party officers at the polling station, constituency, regional, and national levels first ensures that the structures are properly rebuilt and rejuvenated before any presidential candidate is chosen. This is not just a tradition—it is a process of empowering the base before crowning the head.

3. Avoiding the Perception of Imposition

Holding presidential primaries first risks creating the impression that the leadership is being imposed from above, which could alienate the very people who must work to secure victory in the next general elections. Every candidate must go through a process that respects the voice and mandate of the party base.

4. Unity and Inclusiveness Before Competition

The party must heal, reorganize, and reconnect with its members at all levels before diving into potentially divisive presidential campaigns. Prioritizing internal cohesion over premature presidential contests will preserve unity and morale going forward.

5. Protecting the Party’s Future

The youth believe that the future of the NPP depends on fairness, transparency, and discipline. Skipping essential internal elections for the sake of presidential ambitions undermines the very principles that distinguish the NPP from other political parties.

PYA are calling on the leadership of the party to respect the constitutional order, protect the voice of the grassroots, and ensure that no aspirant is given undue advantage. The rebuilding of the party must begin from the bottom—because the roots must be firm before the tree can stand tall.
