Communication lecturer at kumasi base kessben university college, Nana kwame obeng Akatii has ask President Akufo Addo to appoint the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCE’s) to save local governance and public funds.
The lecturer who is also the executive director of the Bureau of Local Governance (BuLoG) said this in Kumasi, when he was speaking to media.
Ellaborating on the 1992 Constitution, the maximum duration for acting position is six months, that is reasonable duration after that it becomes obsolete.
According to him section 20 of the Local Governance Act 2016, Act 936, and the 1992 Constitution, article 243, the MMDCE’s shall be appointed by the President, and it may take about 37 days or more (MSODMMA’s, 2019) before the MMDCE’s can start work in all the 260 District Assemblies in Ghana.
He further intimate that, acting positions according to the Stony Brook University (2021), “acting appointments should not last more than six months “.
The expert details that across Ghana, everything have become standstill in the MMDA’s while the electorate are suffering because of delaying of the MMDCE’s appointments, however, the Assemblies go to the electorate and collect revenues while the electorate are facing huge challenges at their electoral areas, the Assembly members are also engulf with pressure from their community.
Nana kwame obeng Akatii added that if it continues like this, then it means public funds are going “desolate”
