Let’s Respect Nana Addo’s Decision – Failed MMDCE Nominees Tells Ghanaians

admin@myghanamedia September 20, 2021 POLITICS 1,026 Views

Some failed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Ashanti Region are urging for calm among Ghanaians following the release of the list of MMDCEs in the country.

They are calling on aggrieved individuals to bury their differences and support the persons nominated by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to serve in the various local assemblies.

Addressing journalists in Kumasi, spokesperson of a group calling itself, the Coalition of MMDCE aspirants, Emmanuel Frimpong Obrempong called on the nominees to work closely with stakeholders to bring development to their communities.

“Many party faithfuls showed interest and sought to be appointed by the president as MMDCEs. All over the country, we have party people like chairmen, secretaries, organizers, and other key party personalities who were interested in catching the president’s eye. However, it is quite obvious that the president can only appoint one person for this position.”

There were pockets of violent protests in parts of the country after the announcement of the names of the nominees.

There were also threats from some NPP members, maintaining that they will boycott party activities due to the failure of the president to nominate their preferred candidates.

But at the press conference on Monday, September 20, 2021, Emmanuel Frimpong Obrempong asked members of the party to exercise restraint by accepting persons nominated as chief executives for the various local assemblies.

“We are therefore calling on all our brothers and sisters all over the 16 regions of Ghana to exercise restraint and respect the appointment made by the president and accept it in good faith. We are also appealing to our honourable members in the various assemblies to put the interest of Ghana first and endorse the president’s appointees to avoid any unnecessary delay in the local government administration”, he added.

Already, assembly members in the Kumasi Metropolitan Area have threatened to reject President Akufo-Addo’s nominee, Samuel Pyne as the Kumasi Mayor if the government fails to clear over GHS50 million debt the assembly owes.

They say the assembly’s indebtedness has significantly contributed to the underdevelopment of Kumasi.

Nominations in Ashanti Region

For months, residents within the Kumasi Metropolis waited with bated breath for the announcement of the next mayor for the Kumasi.

Nine persons including the then incumbent, Osei Assibey Antwi indicated their willingness to take up the position.

The others included former Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Kennedy Kankam, former MP for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwa, KMA Urban roads’ director, Ing Nana Atta Poku, former Chief Executive of Public Sector Reforms, Thomas Kusi Boafo among others.

Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi later withdrew from the race.

He has now been appointed as the Executive Director of the National Service Scheme.

In the Ashanti Region, some of the key nominees for various municipal and district assembly positions include; former MP for Nhyiaeso, Kennedy Kankam for the Asokore Mampong municipality, Kingsley Osei for Ejura-Sekyedumase, presiding member for Suame municipality Maxwell Ofosu Boakye as Suame MCE, Hamidu Sulemana for Sekyere Afram Plains, Lord Inusah Lansah for old Tafo municipality among other persons.
